Vibrant, joyful, and dramatic are just a few of the words that come to mind in describing the incredibly diverse artwork by Lubbock artist Janelle Spivey. But this talented artist began her adult life as a travel industry professional. After 20 years of working in the tourism industry, Spivey decided to seek a new path, a path that would take her to places she’d never dreamed she’d go.
Self-taught, what makes Spivey’s work so extraordinary is that she can paint anything. From people to landscapes, still life and even abstract – Spivey’s pieces tend to be extremely definitive in her unique and colorful style. She has been a professional artist since 2013.
In 2021, a new opportunity opened itself up for her to open a gallery. Broadway Contemporary Fine Arts Gallery is a long-realized dream. “I wanted to have a space to allow both other local artists and national level artists to display and sell their work in Lubbock” Spivey explained. The gallery currently has over 100 pieces of artwork on display by 15 artists of varying styles and of course a collection by Spivey herself. Spivey, has her studio space in the building as well as she is a prolific painter and works on new pieces constantly.
When asked her favorite style (currently) of her work, she says without hesitation that her abstract pieces are her favorite. “Each one speaks differently to the viewer, and they can be interpreted in many different ways,” she said. I love her wildflower series and she has a striking collection of Lubbock City Limit paintings which are amazing too.
If you are a Lubbock resident and know Lubbock and regional live music, you may have heard of SPiVEY – a popular musician. Ryan Spivey is Janelle’s husband. I asked her what it was like for two talented people to share a marriage and a home. She didn’t hesitate to reply, “FANTASTIC!” She went on to explain they share ideas, bounce creative ideas off each other, support one another and not only share artistic passions, but lots of love.
After years of a career working constantly with people navigating their journeys – now Spivey is navigating her own with passion, precision and loads of talent. The gallery is having its Grand Opening Friday November 5 during the November First Friday Art Trail beginning at 3:00 pm. Her website may be found at https://janellebarringtonspiveyart.com/ and art can be ordered and delivered through the site and by contacting Spivey directly. Her hours are currently flexible and she can always be contacted to meet by appointment. She is also active on social media including Facebook and Instagram.
By visiting this local gallery, you get to not only meet the artist herself, but learn about other artists and works. It is a beautiful space at 1919 Broadway Street and a for sure stop to make during the Friday, November 5 Grand Opening between 3:00 and 9:00 pm.
