In August of 2020, Lubbock was certified as a Music Friendly Community by the Texas Music Office. Lubbock’s Music Friendly Advisory Board saw this certification as much more than a new logo to promote, but an opportunity to make an already revered music industry even better through professional develop workshops, networking events and marketing opportunities to promote more fully what Lubbock music is and the musicians and venues who make it happen. Now, in 2023, the Committee seeks to continue to build on the great traditions of Lubbock music through an innovative survey to dig deeper into the opinions of those in our music industry. In collaboration with the Texas Tech University School of Music, this survey is our attempt to continue that growth in an upward direction by taking the pulse of our industry – both musicians and the venues who open their spaces to them. We hope you will help us learn about your challenges, opportunities and aspirations as it pertains to Lubbock’s music economy.
The tool explores challenges and expectations by venues. It investigates how they market live music; support musicians and what part live music plays in their business plans. For musicians, we want to know their challenges too. Not only challenges, but how they market themselves and what they would like our office to focus on in the coming year with regards to workshops and professional development opportunities in the coming year.
A member of our Music Friendly Advisory Board said it best as we began discussions about this project, “Lubbock music matters!” It does matter, it enriches, it unites and it supports a thriving local economy in a really unique way. We hope you think it matters too and if you are in the Lubbock music community either as a musician or a venue who hosts live music, we ask that you take a few minutes to complete our survey. We do recommend doing it on a computer or Ipad – many of the questions are open ended. When we say we want your opinion, we’re not joking! We’re listening Lubbock!
