In 2021, the Lubbock Music Friendly Committee created an event to connect venue managers and owners with area musicians. The event was moderated by Scott Faris of Amusement Park Recording Studios and featured a panel discussion and then a conversation with a representative from William Morris Agency about management and marketing as a musician. The purpose of the event was to be a point of connection and networking for musicians in Lubbock who are seeking to jump onto new live music stages.
Now, in 2022, the event is back for its second year and will look a little different but will continue to be a unique opportunity for musicians (particularly emerging artists) to connect with live music venues. This year, the event will be held November 15 12:00 to 4:00 at the iconic Blue Light Live with lunch provided by the Tamale Lady. Live music venue panelists this year will be Cooks Garage, Two Docs Brewery, Cotton Court, Cactus Theatre and the Blue Light Live. New for 2022, in addition to featuring this great panel, the event will offer an opportunity to perform for some musicians. Upon registering for the event, artists may opt in to be part of the showcase. This opportunity will be curated by local musicians Scott Faris, Dr. Roger Landes and Jenni Dale Lord.
The event is built around providing emerging musicians in Lubbock a chance to meet and connect with area live music venues which supports the purpose of the Texas Music Friendly Community Certification. When Lubbock received the Music Friendly Community Certification in 2020, the advisory team saw an opportunity to fill a niche by offering professional development and networking opportunities for emerging musicians. Not only does the committee organize Getting the Gig but has also held other workshops which include topics such as copyrighting and publishing music, social media, marketing and financial management. The committee took things a step further by placing these workshops on YouTube to be readily available as a library to anyone searching for help on these complex subjects.
All workshops feature local expertise so it’s easy for viewers to connect with the speakers and gain resources on topics. The purpose of Lubbock’s Music Friendly Community Program is to elevate musicians and live music venues. Lubbock Cultural Arts Foundation is here to help – it’s core to our mission of cultivating and championing the arts.
