Lubbock Symphony Orchestra: Experience 80 Years in a Weekend

Submitted by the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra

Picture a week in Lubbock. Thursday or Friday morning, you’re digging through the antique shops on 34th Street or downtown, looking for something you didn’t know you needed. Maybe you play a round at one of the city’s golf courses before the heat sets in. By the afternoon, you’ve made your way to one of Lubbock’s award-winning wineries, glass in hand, watching the sun drop low over the plains. And by the time you get downtown to Buddy Holly Hall that evening, you’re ready for something bigger than a good glass of merlot. You’re ready for the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra.

That’s the kind of week the Symphony has in mind for its 80th season. Golf in the morning. Antiquing or a little retail therapy downtown in the afternoon. Wine before dinner. Live orchestral music to close it out. It’s not a bad way to spend a couple of days in West Texas, and it’s the kind of trip that’s easy to build a whole itinerary around.

The Symphony has been part of this city since 1946, and eighty years doesn’t happen without a community that keeps showing up. This season gives people plenty of reasons to keep doing just that.

Things kick off Thursday, September 3 with Prokofiev & Shostakovich. Later in the season, audiences can catch a full performance of the Verdi Requiem, and next May the 4th the orchestra will perform the score to Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back live as the film plays overhead. The rest of the season, including the holiday concert and everything in between, is up on the Symphony’s website.

“You do not want to miss a single concert this season, come join Maestro David Cho, our musicians, and your friends at Buddy Holly Hall for the 80th Season!” said Heather Hocker, President and CEO, Lubbock Symphony Orchestra.

Whether you’ve held season tickets for years or have never set foot in Buddy Holly Hall, the 80th season is a decent excuse to plan a trip to Lubbock. Pair it with a winery and a night out, and you’ll leave with a pretty good idea of why this city has kept an orchestra going for eighty years.
