There is nothing like a great film. Films inspire in us a range of emotions; they reflect the human condition and experience. Lubbock, a certified “Film Friendly Community” by the Texas Film Commission, has an amazing local film festival which has inspired and excited thousands since its beginnings 18 years ago.
LHUCA’s Flatland Film Festival aims to cultivate an appreciation for film, video, and the digital moving-image expression and to support artists working in this mode of expression. During its tenure, the festival has had filmmakers from all over the world screen their work and provide personal insight into their inspiration and motivation by participating in panel discussions during the event.
Each year, audiences experience a diverse collection of feature films, documentaries, shorts, animations, music videos, art installations, and other forms of creative sight and sound that stimulate emotion and challenge perspective.
The festival looked different in 2020, as did many things, and was held outside in the LHUCA Plaza under the South Plains stars. This year however, the festival will again be held in the quaint Firehouse Theater in the LHUCA building on September 23-25. The Film Festival showcases, in partnership with Texas Tech Public Media, both local and international films and offers a forum for filmmakers to showcase their creative work to eager audiences who love great cinema.
The LHUCA event is a competition and has several categories for accolades including those for short films, feature films and documentaries. The shorts are one of the most popular elements of the festival – they are often humorous and unique.
The awards include Best in Fest, Audience Choice, Best Performance, Best Director and Best Feature Film. Flatland Film Festival will kick off Thursday evening with a late screening following a red-carpet welcome. On Saturday there will be panels with filmmakers to share thoughts about their work. Also, on Saturday, there will be an after party at Two Docs Brewery to wrap up this great event.
Red carpet welcomes, panel discussions and a great after party flank what the heart of the Flatland Film Festival is about – great film. There are three feature films this year including: “Cowboys”, “Her and Him”, and “Kid Candidate”. A great variety of short films will be sprinkled through each day of the festival. This is a great Lubbock event and it’s one not to be missed.
Passes are available as a festival pass or day pass option and there is student pricing and may be purchased at Flatland Film Festival — LHUCA or at the door.
