BIO
Roger Martin is a guitar player and songwriter who lives in Lubbock, Texas. He first learned guitar from a neighbor kid when he was 12, and started writing songs at 16. Fast forward though a lot of years of raising a family and making a living then he hit 50 and decided to get serious again about playing and writing. He formed a band called the Dirt Storm Drifters and has recorded two CDs.
Like most young guitar players in the 70’s – he wanted to be Jimmy Page. It was kinda’ hard though when all you have is an acoustic guitar and a bunch of John Denver albums. Now his idols are the old singer-songwriters and the folk singers – James Taylor, John Denver, Gordon Lightfoot, CSN&Y but he’s also a late-blooming fan of The Beatles, The Eagles and Michael Martin Murphy as well as finger pickers like Chet Atkins and Tommy Emmanuel.
Two years ago he took on his biggest bucket list project – he enrolled in the Commercial Music Program at South Plains College. He’s gained a lot of confidence from the program and it shows in his music.
Music
Roger plays a mix of folk, country, finger style and old rock as well as the songs he’s written about loneliness, failure, getting old, and a silly song or two. He tries to write at least one happy song a decade.
